1200-1350 & MODERN ARCHITECTURE

In 1200-1350 years Gothic architecture shows it’s effect in europe. In gothic architecture the buildings had almost any  walls but facades with all glass-window. Also, the structural elements were always visible between windows. One of the most important structural element of gothic buildings is flying buttress which support the elements from outside of the building. By the help of these structural issues, people became able to make spaces with too much high. Generally there was a main huge space and around it there were smaller subspaces.

Similar with these, there are some examples with the same idea of gothic architecture. For example, Richard Rogers ‘s Lloyd’s of London Building do not hide it’s structural elements and they are abviously the most dominant elements in the building. Also,  there is a main and huge space which is surrounded by lower subspaces.

There is one more example from modern architecture that I want to mention about the flying buttress structural elemenet. In  Santiago Calatrava’s City of Art and Sciences builiding the structural elements  support the building from outside just like flying buttresses in gothic architecture.
